London Festival Weekend

There will be no gym on Friday 16 Oct or Saturday 17 Oct owing to all the coaches being at the London Festival of Gymnastics.

Coaching update

Welcome to Sarah Price, Vicky Everett and Amy Moulton who have joined the coaching ranks.  They have all embarked upon their Level 1 courses and hope to be qualified in January.  Please give them your full support.  Also, Steve and Jason have begun their modules for Level 3, meaning they can now coach more skills.  There are four modules altogether, and it can take up to 2 years to get fully qualified at level 3, so please give your full support to Steve and Jason!!

Summer Break

As you have seen from the newsletter, Spirit will take a summer break in August.  The last training will be on 11 August and the first training of the new term will be on 1 Sep.  Have a great summer!!

Congratulations to Steve Wood!!!!

On 9 August one of our Level 1 coaches, Steve Wood, passed his Level 2 assessment and is now qualified to coach without supervision.  Not only did he pass, but he achieved the highest mark of all the candidates in the written exam.  A just reward for all of his hard work – many congratulations Steve!!!  And a big thank you to Nina, Sophie and Chantelle who went with Steve all the way to Checkers to be his gymnasts for the exam.  Couldn’t have done it without you girls!

No Gym on 11 July 2015

July is competition month for acro gymnastics, with the South West Championships being held over two weekends.  The lower grades will compete at Gryphon Leisure Centre, Sherborne on Sunday 5 July, and the higher grades will compete at Wellsprings Leisure Centre, Taunton on 11-12 July.  As a result of the coaches all being committed to the Taunton event, there will be no gym classes at all on Saturday 11 July.  However, why not come and support the club?  Recreational and Development class members are encouraged to come along and support our gymnasts at both of these events to see what the competitions are all about.

Committee Vacancies

There have been volunteers for the positions of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and the process of handing over these jobs has begun.  Thank you to those who volunteered.

Newsletter

Please check the mail slots for the February newsletter, there are several still waiting to be collected!  It contains important information about committee vacancies. Thanks.

Huge congratulations to all our gymnasts who performed at Colston Hall on Sunday. You were fantastic!

My Leadership Academy

Spirit has registered for the exciting new British Gymnastics “My Leadership Academy”.  Under this scheme, gymnasts can take a greater role in running their club, with their own committee and their own projects.  In return, their achievements are recognised by the award of bronze, silver and gold certificates.  The scheme is aimed at ages 11-17 primarily, but is open to anyone over 17 and Spirit would especially welcome the active inputs of our senior gymnasts into how the club is run.  If this is of interest to you then please make yourself known to Al Haigh who will be the mentor to the Leadership Academy.  We will kick off the new group after the summer break.  For more information on the scheme, follow this link: http://www.british-gymnastics.org/coaching/volunteers/leadership-academies?id=2612:myla&catid=329

Terrie Rogers has been nominated for Coach of the Year and the Club has been nominated for Club of the Year in the South Somerset Gold Star Awards. The results will be announced on 29 October.

1 Oct 13

Note that there will be NO CLASSES during half term week 27 Oct to 3 Nov inclusive, back to normal on Monday 4 Nov.

Also the competition group will be performing at the London Festival of Gymnastics on 18-20 Oct, and Terrie and Jason will need to be there,  so there will be no recreational class or development class on 18/19 Oct.

Finally, owing to Terrie’s absence supporting her son Chris in the European Championships in Portugal, the Recreational and Competition Groups will train dance work only during the week 21-26 Oct in preparation for the Christmas Show.

WE WON THE FINAL!! ACROFUSION won Let Me Entertain You at the Octagon Theatre in a talent show that was overflowing with seriously impressive talent.  The standard this year was higher than last year, but the ACROFUSION team’s dedication and hard work was recognised by the judges.  The team’s exciting and risky display wowed the audience and showed what this club is capable of.  Well done to all the team and their coaches, all those hours of practice really were worth the effort. We are all so proud of you!!!

“I thought AcroFusion were great last year, but this year they were even better … the routine was fantastic .. the group were the rightful winners on a night packed with exceptional performances. Congratulations too to all the parents, supporters and helpers behind the scenes.”

     – Adam Burgan, Arts and Entertainment Manager, The Octagon Theatre.

18 Sep 13

Great news – after months of very hard work by your committee, Spirit has been awarded GymMark status by our governing body, British Gymnastics.  This means that they are pleased with the way the club is run, and consider us to be “safe, efficient and child-friendly”.  A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to achieving this massive milestone in the life of the club.

15 Sep 13

WE MADE IT INTO THE FINAL!!  Well done to the AcroFusion display team and their coaches for getting through the semi-final of “Let Me Entertain You” at the Octagon Theatre.  Out of 18 acts, 9 went through to the final on 28 Sep so please buy your tickets quickly, go along to the Octagon and make lots of noise to support the team!  Let’s see if we can go two better than last year’s third place – good luck AcroFusion!!

STOP PRESS: DISPLAY AT SOUTH PETHERTON CANCELLED

Unfortunately, the overnight rain has made the ground too wet for safety, and more showers are forecast during the day. Therefore we have agreed with the event organisers that Spirit will not be displaying this afternoon. Messages have been posted on the club’s Facebook page, and texts have been sent to all parents. The decision was made by 10am and message were sent straight away, therefore we hope that everyone was told in time. We apologise if you have made a wasted journey.

Training tonight at St Michael’s will still go ahead for those involved.

2 Sep 13

Next display: 8 Sep at South Petherton. Display at 2pm, please be there by 1pm.

London Festival. Planning has started for the London Festival in October. We have been given slots for the Friday evening gala, and Saturday and Sunday mornings. We need to know who will be going, so please fill in your reply slips as soon as possible. When you pay your deposit to secure the place this will go towards the overall cost of the weekend.

28 Jul 13

Display at Westland Leisure Centre. As we have advertised on the last couple of newsletters, we were invited to display at the coffee morning of the Westland Retirement Association on Wednesday 7 August. It is at the Westland Leisure Centre starting at 10.00am so could gymnasts please be there by 9.00am.  There will be adult supervision throughout, and we intend to do a display in a similar format to Sherborne Castle Country Fair, but of course it will be limited to those partnerships who are able to attend. If you can’t be there please let us know as soon as possible.

This is a good oppportunity to advertise the club and do some fundraising so any adults who can help would be very welcome.

17 Jul 13

Remember that the Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 28 July at the Airfield Tavern (same place as last year, see June Newsletter) at 4.30pm.  As last year we will provide light refreshments and it would be great to see as many gymnasts and parents as possible. This is your opportunity to hear what your committee has been up to on your behalf, and to ask questions. We still have a vacancy for a recreational parent committee member and we need a volunteer for Treasurer, although the role is going to be split up as it is quite big for one person. If you are interested, contact Liz Haigh in advance, or volunteer on the day!!!

14 Jul 13

Remember that Terrie is taking a well-earned holiday now that the South West Champs are behind us.  She will be away for the next two weeks.  The Long Sutton classes are all cancelled for two weeks, back to normal on Monday 29 July. The Preston classes are going ahead under Jason, but will be modified to cover dancework, conditioning and a bit of fun!  Remember also that Friday 19 July is the maintenance evening – we will be conducting checks on all our equipment, repairing where possible and making a wishlist for replacements where necessary.  Any help from parents would be much appreciated!

13 Jul 13

Good luck to all our gymnasts competing at the SW Champs in Taunton this weekend!

6 Jul 13

Good luck to our gymnasts competing this weekend at Sherborne!

20 May 13

On Monday 27 May we will be performing at Sherborne Castle Country Fair.  We’ll need volunteers to help set up and take down our equipment, and to rattle collection buckets during the day.  While we will have some complimentary tickets for gymnasts and coaches as a first priority, if there are any left over they will go to volunteers on a first come first served basis!

19 May 13

Congratulations to Sophie, Tara and Izzy for their 8th place in a field of 12 clubs in the Grade 2 Women’s Group at the National Finals on Sunday.  Well done girls!!

15 May 13

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN to Chris and Eleanor who won the silver medal at the World Acro Cup.  Well done Chris and Eleanor from everyone at Spirit Gym Club!!!

14 Apr 13

CONGRATULATIONS to Chris Rogers who, with his partner Eleanor Franks, won silver medal in the mixed pair at the British Acro Championships today!!  Well done Chris and Eleanor!!

30 Mar 13

Because of the Easter weekend, there is no gym on Sunday or Monday.  Back to normal from Tuesday 2 April onwards.

29 Mar 13

Just a reminder for those who used to train at Huish.  These classes are now at Long Sutton Primary School – see the Venues link for the address.

On Mondays the times are the same as before – next class is on 8 April at 5pm.  No class on Easter Monday owing to the bank holiday.

On Wednesdays the times have moved to 5.30-6.30 and 6.30-7.30 after consultation with parents and coaches.  Next class on 3 April.

15 Mar 13

The committee meeting scheduled for 17 March will take place at Nicki’s house at 2pm on Saturday 16 March.  If you can’t make the new time please contact the secretary.

Huish Training Facilities – message from the Management Committee. Those who attend training at Huish will be relieved to know that we have secured a new venue (see message below from 5 Mar 13).  From April onwards training will move to Long Sutton Primary School where there is a heated hall with gym equipment available. We hope this change is not inconvenient for our members, thank you for your patience!

10 Mar 13

Firstly Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mums, Grannys and Aunties!!!

Second, please note that classes at Huish on Monday 18 and Wednesday 20 March are cancelled owing to the coach travelling to Portugal to watch her son Chris compete in the Maia International Acro Cup.  Good luck to Chris from all at Spirit.  Yeovil classes will still take place at the usual times but with conditioning and dance work only.   Those who normally attend a Monday or Wednesday class are invited to attend an extra session in Yeovil once Terrie is back (from Monday 25 March onwards).

Third, for the same reason, both training and the committee meeting on Sunday 17 March is cancelled.  Watch this space for an alternative.

5 Mar 13

Huish Training Facilities – message from the Management Committee. Those who attend classes at Huish, whether as coach, gymnast or parent/guardian, will know that the facility is below the standard we would expect, particularly because of the lack of heating over the winter. We have repeatedly spoken to the management company about this but you will have noticed that they seem reluctant to do anything about it. Therefore we are now actively pursuing an alternative location for Huish classes and hope to be able to announce a solution in the very near future; thank you for your patience while we investigate this matter.

3 Mar 13

Medals abound at the start of year competitions! Spirit has had a very successful few weeks in the year’s early events, which qualify gymnasts for the major events in the summer.  Full details of who won what are in the Club Achievements section, but this is genuinely about more than winning medals.  Although we’re all very proud of those who got a place on the podium, it was the all-round team achievements that really show that Spirit is up there with the big clubs!  A number of pairs and trios finished just outside the medal positions, and this bodes very well for the future, especially when we consider their ages and the fact they still have many years left in them.  A great start to the year, WELL DONE to all those who competed, and a BIG THANK YOU to all our coaches and those who put in lots of hard work in the preparation for each competition and display/event.
